The Better Business Bureau serving Acadiana is warning of a scam that targets small businesses. Scammers are creating fake accounts on the site Upwork and tricking business owner out of money. If you looking to hire a freelance artist online, be sure to do research before hiring.

According to the report from the BBB, the imposters are creating fake profiles with real looking resumes and photos offering cheap services. Once the deposit for service is paid the imposter will usually stop responding. The scammers are using photos from professional websites.

Business owners can protect their selves from being fooled by doing research before they hire. Look for prices that way below market. If the quoted price is too cheap and too good to be cheap, it is most likely a scam.

It is a good idea to conduct a video interview and talk to the freelancer. Ask questions and find out if know how to do the job. And try to find, the individual on other platforms and social media to see if things match up.

If you come across a scam artist or suspicious account, report it right away.
