COLUMN: Truck Stop Camel Encounter Gives Florida-LSU Rivalry a Little More Bite

This Florida-LSU rivalry is getting a little hairy these days.

The Gators-Tigers feud has been simmering in college football for more than a decade — and it has even spilled over into baseball as well.

The lone blemish on LSU’s now legendary 2003 BCS National Championship season was a defeat to Florida, 19-7, who at the time was coached by Ron Zook. Yeah, Nick Saban lost to Ron “Freakin” Zook.

In the years since then the football series has featured the famed Tim Tebow “jump pass” game in 2006, the five fourth-down conversion win for LSU in 2007, the Hurricane Matthew game in 2016 which forced the series to be played in back-to-back years in Gainesville — much to the chagrin of the Geaux Tigas faithful.

This year’s game on Oct. 12 is projected to be a Top 10 matchup with playoff implications for the two programs, that fight over who is the real “DBU,” take the field two weeks from Saturday.

But this past weekend — a little something extra got added to the rivalry game. That’s because a woman from Florida decided to bite the testicle of a camel at the Tiger Truck Stop outside of Baton Rouge.

In case you hadn’t heard the most bizarre story in the past week then here is a condensed version of what occurred last Wednesday.

According to multiple media reports, a Florida truck driver and his wife decided to stop at the infamous truck stop-tourist attraction off of I-10 in Grosse Tete.

If you have never been to this scenic locale — it is the truck stop that proudly proclaims on purple and gold billboards that its caged Tiger lived longer than LSU’s Mike the Tigers. The state of Louisiana refused to allow the owner to purchase, and house, another Tiger in captivity following its death in 2018.

So back to the story.

The husband allegedly was throwing dog treats to the couple’s dog right under the fence that houses Camel, which is named Caspar. Apparently, during the truck stop euphoria the pooch went under or through the fence line and the couple opted to not call for help but decided to crawl underneath the fence, which has signs posted every 10 feet to not do that, to retrieve the dog.

Caspar apparently was in no mood for these Floridian’s shenanigans (to be fair whoever is) and opted to sit on the woman. The couple from Florida felt that the only way to escape this hairy predicament that they now found themselves in was for the wife to chomp down on the testicles on poor Caspar.

Not to worry about Caspar though. Multiple reports have now come out that woman had no teeth so no real damage was done by the incident. And if you were wondering, the Florida couple were even cited for a violation of leash law and for criminal trespassing.

So what does this have to do with the Florida-LSU rivalry? Well for one. A pair of Floridians physically attacked a landmark of great pride (cough, cough) for the purple and gold fans. Secondly, there is no way these two jokers don’t root for the Gators. I mean of all the schools from the Sunshine State — the only ones that would get trapped in a camel enclosure at a LSU supporting truck stop in a place called Grosse Tette would have to be Gator fans.

That all makes this just the latest fascinating chapter in the Florida-LSU feud. I don’t know about you but October 12th can’t come soon enough. Let’s just hope Tiger Truck Stop has enough security by then because the next Gator fans might actually have teeth which would be bad for Caspar.
