Courir de Mardi Gras Offers Something Different for Festival

If you’re looking for something different for Mardi Gras then take a little ride to St. Landry Parish and follow the crowds to Courir de Mardi Gras and Chicken Run. After you witness this celebration, it will forever be etched in your mind.

The Eunice Courir de Mardi Gras is celebrating its 100th year of Courir. This is not like any parade you find in the neighboring cities. Here you will find costumed riders on horses going from house to house soliciting chickens or food items to throw in a big gumbo pot for a community-wide gumbo for all.

The highlight of the event is the chicken run. This is where young revelers try to get the bragging rights by catching a chicken and guinea at the run. The fowl is released by the captain of the event and the fun is on. This event is supposed to be for the youngest of revelers yet, after a morning of consuming their favorite beverage, the chicken run seems too appealing for revelers young and old to participate.

The Courir attracts over 2000 participants every year and the tradition continues to grow. The event is at the Northwest Community Center at 501 Samual Dr. Plan to wake up early or stay up all night. The event starts at 7 am on Mardi Gras day.

There are many Courirs in South Louisiana including the festival runs in Cameron, Church Point, and Jennings.
