Scientists are working on a way to save lives using pigs.
According to an article posted by AP News, there are ongoing experiments that involve researchers implanting pig kidneys into a human. Surgeons in Alabama are testing the procedure using genetically modified pigs. The human involved in the experiment reportedly has no brain activity.
If the test trials are successful, the article states that this procedure could solve the organ shortage crisis.
Recently, doctors in Maryland transplanted a pig heart in a handyman who was faced with a life or death decision. Reports stated that this handyman was not eligible for a human heart so decided to proceed with the surgery. So far, the pig is keeping him alive.
