This could be bad news for folks in Louisiana. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has revised its 2023 hurricane season forecast. The original forecast, issued in May, predicted an “average” season, with a 30% chance of above-average activity. The original prediction was for 12 – 17 named storms, 5 – 9 hurricanes, and 1 -4 major hurricanes.
The revised forecast predicts a 60% chance of an above-average season. The revised forecast predicts 14 – 21 named storms (39 mph +), 6 – 11 hurricanes (74 mph+), and 2 – 5 major hurricanes (111mph+). The upward revision is due to El Nino, which is expected to persist into the winter months and record high water temperatures in the Atlantic. There have been four named Atlantic storms so far, Arlene, Bret, Cindy, and Don. None of them have threatened North America. Keep in mind, peak hurricane season still lies in front of us.
