After living in North Dakota for the past 7 years and before returning home to Acadiana, I was exposed to so many different types of weather in the upper Midwest. Most people will always mention the brutally cold winters. This is true and this year they did not get spared from the cold grip of Mother Nature. I’m happy I missed that mess and the 20+ inches of snow which fell in the last few months.
I will admit though, North Dakota is the windiest state I have ever lived in and I am very well traveled. Regardless of the season, North Dakota seems to have a strong wind on most days. With this said, the National Weather Service in Bismarck does an excellent job forecasting the weather for the state. I have witnessed several weather advisories I have never heard of before. The weather service has even issued life-threatening warnings during the winter months. You know they are serious when forecasters use the term “life-threatening.”
With the cold winter, most of the upper Midwest have been experiencing this season, the National Weather Service in Cleveland recently issued a warning I have never heard of before but I do appreciate it.
According to AOL earlier last month, the Northern Ohio and Pennsylvania area were experiencing strong winds, powerful enough to knock down small trees and blow your small dog around. What did the NWS in Cleveland do? They issued a “Small Dog Warning.” There have been reports of small dogs getting blown around and even lost because of strong winds.
In 2009, a Chihuahua was carried into another county by a 70-mph gust in Waterford Township, Michigan. The six-pound pup was found days later with the help of a psychic.
Sure, I could see Acadiana getting a Small Dog Warning, especially during hurricane season.
Although my two dogs love to ride in the car with their heads out the window, who knows, dogs may love a strong windy day?
