Fly Like An Eagle/The Royal Scam

It was 55 years ago this week that these two lps were released with 10 days of each other. On The Turntable will feature a “full-play” of both,,, we will start with the quadruple platinum “Fly Like An Eagle” from The Steve Miller Band and follow that with Steely Dan’s “The Royal Scam”. Tune in and enjoy!

Fly Like An Eagle

Fly Like an Eagle is the ninth studio album by the Steve Miller Band. The album was released this past week in 1976.  The album was incredibly successful commercially, spawning three singles … The title track, “Take the Money and Run” and “Rock’n Me” … This album is where Miller created his definitive slice of “space blues.”

Fly Like An Eagle has been described as Miller’s best set of songs which include originals and covers like “Mercury Blues” and Sam Cooke’s “You Send Me.”  The album was voted 1976’s best album by Rolling Stone … Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers Eagle to be the 30th  best of 1976 and the 356th of the decade… Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the album 8th in its year-end top 100.  Rolling Stone Magazine ranked the LP 445th on its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

Notable Tracks – ‘Mercury Blues’ ‘Fly Like An Eagle’ ‘Take The Money And Run’ ‘Rock’n Me’

The Royal Scam

The Royal Scam is not Pretzel Logic … however, I find myself spinning this more often than any other LP in Steely Dan’s catalog … The Royal Scam is their fifth studio album released this very week in 1976.  The album was not as highly rated in its release with critics finding it not showing much musical process from its predecessors.

The Royal Scam is the first album without guitarist Jeff Baxter and is, ironically, more guitar laden than previous Dan releases … The guitar work was done by committee with Walter Becker, Denny Dias,  Larry Carlton, Elliott Randall and Dean Parks all contributing …  Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers The Royal Scam to be the 17th best album of 1976 and the 239th of the decade … Digital Dream Door Dot Com ranked the lp 77th on its year end top 100.

Notable Tracks – ‘Kid Charlemagne’ ‘Don’t Take Me Alive’ ‘Haitian Divorce’

Tune in to On The Turntable Saturday at 6pm and again Sunday at 7am. Listen over-the-air on 97.7 The Rewind. On line at www.kvol1330.com or on The Rewind App. You can also listen ‘on demand’ on The Rewind website.
