Dusty In Memphis/Otis Blue – Otis Redding Sings Soul

This week On  The Turntable is going to do something has not been done in over 100 episodes … we will air two repeat performances …. These two lps were very instrumental in the creation of On The Turntable and we thought they warrant the encore … Dusty Springfield’s “Dusty In Memphis” and Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul …

Dusty In Memphis

Dusty in Memphis is the fifth studio album by Dusty Springfield. Although the album sold poorly when it was first released in 1969, the album has since been acclaimed by critics as one of the greatest records of all time and Springfield’s best work. The album received a Grammy award in 2001.

I find this lp a complete contradiction…It was recorded to boost Dusty’s career, instead it stalled her career…It only charted at 99 on the American LP Charts yet is considered by many to be one of the greatest lps of all time…. The Best Rock n Roll Albums of all Time ranks Dusty in Memphis at #17!  Personally I love this lp…Son Of A Preacher Man has always been one of my all-time favorite tunes….and was featured in one of my all-time favorite movies…Pulp Fiction…the combination of southern soul and Dusty’ s British accent create the perfect pitch …

Only reaching number 99 on the American album charts and failing to chart altogether on the British Top 40, Dusty In Memphis has survived the test of time….Dusty in Memphis has frequently been named one of the greatest albums of all-time; according to Acclaimed Music, it is the 104th most ranked record on critics’ all-time lists.  The album is listed in the book ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’.   Best Ever Albums Dot Com ranks Dusty In Memphis as the 20th best lp of 1969…That puts the album in some very good company, and  #74th best of the 1960’s.  Digital Dream Door Dot com considers Dusty in Memphis the 14th best lp of 1969 … Rolling Stone ranked the record 89th on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.  I do not believe that I have ever seen an album bomb so greatly and then become so well regarded and awarded …

Notable Tracks – ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ ‘Breakfast In Bed’ ‘Just A Little Lovin”

Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul

Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul is the third studio lp from Otis Redding and considered his most complete lp.  This is the lp that inspired On The Turntable… In September 2017 I was watching a Cinemax Series called Quarry … This lp was a center point of the movie … I had this lp at one time and hearing it in the program made me realize how much I missed it.  I ordered a new 180 gram reissue copy and thought about how radio stations used to play lps in their entirety and how that had gone away … So, we created On The Turntable … we are now into our third year and still having fun … Otis Blue consists of mostly cover versions of other soul artists … Otis covers The Temptations, Sam Cooke and BB King he even covers The Stones … there are three Redding penned songs on the lp and they are all on side one …

As was the case with previous lps, Otis was backed by the house band Booker T & The MGs, The Memphis Horns and Isaac Hayes … Otis Redding’s powerful singing makes this a gritty and alive lp … the album is included in many best of lists … including Rolling Stones Greatest Albums of All Time – listed at #74 … Time Magazine listed Otis Blue in its 100 Greatest Albums of All Time … It is also featured in the book ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’ …. Best Ever Albums Dot Com considers Otis Blue as the 6th best album of 1965 and the 48th best of the 1960’s … Digital Dream Door Dot Com considers Otis Blue as the 4th best lp of 1965 …

Notable Tracks – ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’ ‘Respect’ ‘I’ve  Been Loving You Too Long’ ‘Satisfaction’ ‘Shake’
