This week we chose two of the first, most dynamic Prog Rocks lps of the 70’s. Both of which are featured in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.”
The first selection of this week’s program is Close To The Edge by Yes from 1972. The fifth studio album from and an all-time favorite … Close To The Edge has been hailed a “flawless masterpiece” by critics …. Close to the Edge would make the Top Five in sales on both sides of the Atlantic, dispatch Yes on the longest tour of their career … a tour that I was fortunate to see in 1972 at Cobo Arena in Detroit for a mere five dollars and fifty cents for the ticket. This is still one of my top five concerts of all time and forever left an indelible imprint in my life as an audiophile. Favorites from this lp for me are – “I Get Up-I Get Down” and “Siberian Khatru”
We follow Close To The Edge with a Prog Rock lp from 1974. Crime Of The Century is Supertramp’s third studio album release in September of 74. This is another lp that I consider to be flawless. I love every song on both sides of this lp. I was able to catch Supertramp in concert two years later at Ford Auditorium in Detroit. This was another great show. Favorites from this lp include – ‘School’ ‘Rudy’ and ‘Crime of the Century’.
This week’s airs at 3pm on Saturday – three hours earlier than normal due to Astros Baseball – However, On The Turntable will air at its normal time on Sunday morning – 7am Central.
